M. Matlosz was born in 1957 in Elizabeth (New Jersey, USA). He holds a BS degree in chemical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and a PhD from the department of chemical engineering of the University of California, Berkeley, where his thesis work concerned experimental and theoretical studies in electrochemical engineering.
He began his professional research career in the department of materials science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne (Switzerland) from 1985 to 1993, where he worked on processing technologies for electroplating and metal surface finishing.
